What is COPD?
COPD is a chronic inflammatory disease that obstructs airflow from your lungs. Although there are several types of COPD, the three primary conditions are:
- Chronic bronchitis: inflammation that narrows the airways and causes thick mucus
- Emphysema: air sacs are damaged and collapse as they’re exposed to cigarette smoke and other irritating substances
- Non-reversible asthma
In some cases, COPD is inherited, but it’s caused by smoking cigarettes in about 75% of all patients.
The symptoms caused by COPD include:
- Chronic cough with mucus production (chronic bronchitis)
- Shortness of breath
- Chest tightness
- Blueness of lips and fingernails
- Frequent respiratory infections
- Unintended weight loss (in later stages)
COPD has several stages of progression. Stage 1 COPD is milder. Often times, Stage 2 COPD is when symptoms start to appear. Stage 3 COPD typically causes serious changes in symptoms, lung health, and overall health and well-being.
Patients with Stage 4 COPD, also known as End-stage COPD, experience severe airflow limitations. Simple tasks such as cooking a simple meal and taking a shower leave the patient out of breath and exhausted. A patient’s lung function can drop to thirty percent or less. Stage 4 COPD is typically treated with corticosteroids, inhalers (bronchodilators) which will help open the airways. If you do have a severe flare-up you may end up hospitalized. COPD can be life-threatening and should not be taken lightly.

Steroids used over a long period of time can introduce side effects and pose added risks. COPD is a progressive disease, and the key is to stop or slow down the progression – not simply obtain short-term symptomatic relief through the use of traditional treatments. Traditional treatments including medications, pulmonary rehabilitation, and oxygen therapy do not slow down or reverse the progression of the disease, but simply manage the symptoms.
